NEW! Special Event: Reds of the Harvard Art Museums’ Forbes Pigment Collection, with Alison Cariens, Conservation Coordinator | Thursday, December 17, 12:00pm, on ZOOM. Click here to register.

Why RED? For nearly 20 years, the Cambridge Art Association has hosted a fall exhibit, open to artists from the New England states, centered around a color – RED or BLUE, depending on the year. Both the success of the exhibit series, and the challenge to participating artists, lies in channeling the varied meanings of a color like RED. It is the color of action, violence, heat. It is the color of luck, happiness, and passion. RED is more than a color. Past jurors for the RED & BLUE Biennials include: Joseph Ketner; Amy Sadao (Director, ICA Philadelphia); Howard Yezerski (Miller Yezerski Gallery); Carl Belz (Rose Art Museum); Jane Farver (MIT List Visual Arts Center); Vera Ingrid Grant (The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African & African-American Art); Nick Capasso (Fitchburg Art Museum); Sarah Montross (deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum); Dan Byers (Carpenter Center for Visual Arts).

About the Juror | Layla Bermeo is the Kristin and Roger Servison Associate Curator of American Paintings, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 2019, Bermeo organized Frida Kahlo and Arte Popular, the MFA’s first-ever Kahlo exhibition, and co-curated Collecting Stories: Native American Art (2018–2019), which explored the range of perspectives, motivations and voices involved in building the early holdings of Native American art at the MFA.

Previously, Bermeo co-curated the Black History/Art History Performance Art Series at Harvard University, held curatorial fellowships at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Williams College Museum of Art, and served as a guest curator at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. She received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and graduate degrees from Williams College and Harvard University. WBUR, a National Public Radio news station, recently named Bermeo as one of the ARTery 25, a cohort of 25 millennials of color impacting art and culture in Boston.

Juror’s Statement | The challenges that we now confront every day — COVID-19, climate change, social injustices — are explored by many of the New England artists who submitted works to the Cambridge Art Association’s 2020 exhibition focused on the color RED. Often difficult to describe in words, these issues are visualized in flame-covered canvases and portraits of essential workers, but they also emerge in bold abstractions, deep examinations of nature, and meditations on loneliness. The color red represents violence in the hands of some artists, joy in others, and as I looked closely at each work, I was struck by the constantly shifting permutations and meanings. As they responded to this call and to the world around them, artists of this region experimented, stretching the limitations of color, form, and materials.

Within this highly diverse and competitive group of 267 artists, I was particularly interested in those who engaged with, but sought to transcend, our current moment. Their paintings, watercolors, prints, textiles, and other objects grapple with illness, wildfires, and protests, but will be legible and compelling to people living far beyond 2020. The approximately 70 works that I was able to select also show evidence of innovative techniques and careful consideration of formal concerns, whether the artists are trained or self-taught. In one show, they are loosely organized into themes of landscape, plant and animal life, and abstraction. The other show focuses on climate change, figures, and the built environment. Both shows, and all of the artists, represent creative voices that tell many different stories and speak to many different audiences. This digital exhibition is but one platform.

It has been my honor to serve as juror for RED. As someone who primarily studies historical art, I am so grateful to gain insight into the practices of local living artists. I thank Erin Becker, Rebecca Schnopp, and everyone at the Cambridge Art Association for this opportunity, and look forward to continuing to strengthen connections across our New England arts communities.
