About the Juror | Born and raised in New York City, Ben Sloat earned degrees from UC Berkeley and the SMFA/Tufts. His work has been shown in venues such as the Havana Biennial, Matanzas; Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Dublin City Gallery/The Hugh Lane, Dublin; Peabody Essex Museum, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the Queens Museum. Solo exhibitions include those at Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston; Coop Gallery in Nashville; Galerie Laroche/Joncas in Montreal; Gallery 126 in Galway; Front Gallery in Oakland; and the American Cultural Center in Taipei. He is the director of the MFA in Visual Arts program at Lesley Art + Design in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Juror’s Statement | In the context of these unprecedented times, the importance of art as a means of expression, as a personal outlet, as a form of connection, becomes ever more significant. The history of art is often described in the context of heightened historical moments, such as “post war”, but I’ve come to see the efforts of artists during those moments of social isolation as the true place of positive change. These are moments of artistic labor and thinking, of the amplification of the need for art in our personal lives and our social bonds. I am pleased to share these selections with the wider community of the Cambridge Arts Association and hope that it brings a measure of solace and connectivity to all of you.
