2024 National Prize Show

May 16 – August 1, 2024

Opening Reception + Awards Presentation | May 22, 2024 from 6-8pm
Program | Online Talk with Ben Sloat: What is an artist in the 21st century?
Presented at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery & CAA @ University Place

Juried by Ben Sloat, Director of the MFA in Visual Arts program at Clark University

About Ben Sloat | Born and raised in New York City, Ben Sloat earned degrees from UC Berkeley and SMFA/Tufts. His work has been shown in venues such as the Havana Biennial (Matanzas), Radium Art Center (Busan), Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen), Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), Dublin City Gallery/The Hugh Lane (Dublin), Peabody Essex Museum (Salem), Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond), and the Queens Museum. Solo exhibitions include those at Das Klohauschen (Munich), Steven Zevitas Gallery (Boston); Coop Gallery (Nashville), Galerie Laroche/Joncas (Montreal), Gallery 126 (Galway), Front Gallery (Oakland), and the American Cultural Center (Taipei). He is the Director of the MFA in Visual Arts program at Clark University in Worcester.

Juror’s Statement

Big thanks to Erin Becker, Candice Driver, and the Cambridge Art Association team for organizing this exhibition call, and for all the artists who took the time to share their works. I’m grateful for the Cambridge Art Association for the wonderful community they have built, both in-person and online, which serves to connect artists locally, regionally, and nationally.

In a time of cultural acceleration, techno-alienation, and the barrage of over-information which confronts us daily, having an inclusive space of belonging in shared artistic interest and rigorous discourse feels more crucial than ever.

The works selected for this exhibition represent an idiosyncratic curation of sorts – something about them rang familiar given this particular moment, and allowed a type of unfolding conversation between various artists and art mediums to emerge.

I saw artists confronting forms of confusion and contradictions present in our lived experiences, but also quiet moments of wonder, and energetic bursts of exuberance. I saw artists processing their emotional lives, refining their techniques, experimenting with the unknown, shouting to the stars, and courageously revealing their vulnerabilities. I saw artists sharing themselves

Art, in a sense, is a type of cultural filter, one which allows the viewer to experience the many visual and psychological layers present in certain eras. An exhibition like this one is of particular value because artists serve the dual role as creator and association member, maker and viewer –  they get to see how differently their work communicates in relationship with peer artworks in real time, and perhaps learn something new from their creation, seeing their own work with fresh eyes.

They get to see who they are, not just as an artist in a studio, but as an artist in a community.
