ABOUT THE JUROR

Shana Dumont Garr is a contemporary art curator, writer, and educator based in Greater Boston. Currently, she is a professor at Emerson College in the Department of Visual and Media Arts and an assistant curator of special projects and campus engagement at Emerson Contemporary, an academic gallery specializing in media art.

Garr is a doctoral student in art and philosophy at the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts, focusing her research on how, spirituality, religion, and technology impact relationships with the land in the context of climate change.

Garr was the Curator of Fruitlands Museum in Harvard from 2016 to 2022, most recently co-curating the New England Triennial with Sarah Montross, Chief Curator at deCordova Sculpture Park + Museum. Previously Garr served as the director of Kingston Gallery, the Director of exhibitions and programs at Artspace in Raleigh, NC, and held roles at the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, NC, and the Montserrat College of Art Gallery and Visiting Artist Program in Beverly, MA. Garr earned her MA in Art History from Boston University, and her BA in Creative Writing and Art from Colby College in Waterville, ME.

JUROR’S STATEMENT

It has been a pleasure to immerse myself in art made by this community. I appreciate the trust that was given to me to jury this year’s member exhibition, and took care in the process while reveling in the opportunity to see a wide range of art in many mediums by artists at various points of their lives.

In the television series “Portrait Artist of the Year,” a group of nine artists–

both professional and amateur–meet at a museum and paint the portrait of noted people, including actresses and athletes, while museum guests watch. Three art experts judge the paintings after three hours, narrowing them down to a winner, and the competition goes on to further stages. My favorite part of the show is watching the artists at work (with the portrait sitters’ reactions being a close second). My enjoyment of studio visits and conversations with artists inspired me to focus my career on contemporary art.

I thought of the Portrait Artist of the Year judges’ process while reviewing this year’s 177 submissions, most of which included three entries, which amounted to paring down 500 works to about 70. To accomplish this, I created a set of parameters and then selected the art that most closely suited them. Before stating these parameters, I want to share my commiserations with the artists whose work did not end up in this grouping, as your work was lovely to see, and I valued the opportunity to see what you sent.

For the 2025 CAA Members show, each accepted work fit one or more of the following qualities:

  • The form and the meaning support each other
  • Seeing the work inspired me to create, whether to try new techniques or to write about what I saw
  • The artist demonstrated mastery in their chosen techniques
  • What the art communicated could not have been shared in any other way

The paintings, prints, photos, sculptures, and other works include gorgeous patches of light illuminating interiors at sunset, the wonder of new love, the painful challenge of loneliness, the savvy enterprise of upcycling, and lamentations about climate change and the associated stress of extractive practices on natural resources. The works of art share the styles, techniques, and palettes of many cultures. They share quiet moments, triumphant epiphanies, and complex questions.

For me, the promise of making, seeing, and sharing art brings hope. Art is one of the most vital communication tools. If beauty and love are equivalents, then art transmits the love of what the artist sees, what inspired them to make, the time spent making it, and the belief that it should be shared for others to enjoy.

CAA is vital to sustaining the beauty and love of this community. Thank you to Erin Becker, who departed CAA during the process of jurying this show, after years of generous and inspiring service to the Cambridge art community, and Candice Driver, who patiently supported me along the way, Tyler Whitaker, and volunteers, whose work created an exhibition that enables each work of art to shine on its own and as part of a lively grouping.
