Juror Statement:

Traditional and experimental, timeless and timely: the 61 artists in this exhibition keep surprising us with their originality, inventiveness, and creative forms of expression.

Their media are diverse: They forage, weave, weld, carve, collage. Some work with paint on canvas; others, camera and computer. You’ll find documentary photography (Lydia Douglas’s kinetic diasporic dancers) and lyrical abstraction (Iman Aurora Sakkaf’s dreamy acrylic paintings). Luminous stained glass (Cassie Doyon’s tribute to Bonnard) and intriguing forest fungi, made of stone (Robin MacDonald-Foley). Some artists portray a state of nature; others, a state of motion; others, a state of mind.

If there were a prize for a recurring subject, it would be landscape–especially New England’s distinctive topography.  Masha Hoffey serves up a lush and moody take on a New Hampshire summit. Using oil on paper, Amalia Tagaris conjures the atmospheric effects at Maine’s Cape Elizabeth.

Water is everywhere. Tranquil seas (Rob Diebboll’s minimalist “Summer Meditation”), roiling waves (Jess Hurley Scott’s dramatic painted plexiglass), scary rough seas (Susan Dodge’s struggling swimmers). Rising seas that threaten us all, as in Alexandra Rozenman’s eerie flooded music school. In Iku Oseki’s “Deluge,” skateboard-toting teens part the waves—hope for the future?

For some artists, nature’s fruits are a continuing inspiration. In brilliant color, Ellen Grabiner shares her deep study of the quirky prickly pear, while Virginia Cramer’s more abstract work highlights the mythologies and personalities of pomegranates. In his detailed graphite drawings, Jim Banks renders the wonder of weeds, while Nancy Crasco’s textile works depict invasive plants.

Then there are animals, joyful and expressive. Stretching luxuriously on draped fabric, Camila Martorell Michel’s black cat slyly evokes art history’s odalisques (and their consorts). Zhonghe (Elena) Li’s Zen racoon is a contemporary take on the Chinese art of papercuts—through a process that includes silkscreen and watercolor monoprint.

In other twists on tradition, Bayda Asbridge wove an Arabian pot from aluminum wire, with a ball inside to shake things up. Roya Amigh samples Persian miniatures in her delicate sewn pieces advocating for women’s rights.

Yet another art-historical tradition, the self-portrait, is in full force—used to proudly convey identity, assert identity, and sometimes to obscure it. Depicting herself on wind-swept beach, Kseniya Galper is alone–but not. Michele Riche’s abstracted “Bather’s Self-Portrait #1” is a study in isolation. In “Another Mourning,” Campbell McLean appears with their partner at a gleefully sluggish breakfast. For Julia Brown, who is autistic, a smocked blue sateen textile acts as a stand-in for the artist. Its title, “Please, Touch Gently,” is at once a warning, an entreaty, and a call to action.

Finally, there’s Nasiri Guzman’s “Me, Myself, and I,” a self-portrait of the artist, brush in hand, set in a living room studio. It’s an intricately choreographed scene, enriched by multiple conversations among objects in the space where the creative and domestic collide. The more you look, the more you see.
