Juried by Hadley P. Powell, founder of Powell Fine Art Advisory
About Patterns in Nature | Tessellations. Fractals. Spirals. Waves. Meanders. Patterns appear everywhere in nature, from the petals of a flower to the crystalline structures of a snowflake. They highlight the order and chaos of nature, and form the building blocks of life around us.
The Cambridge Art Association is pleased to invite CAA artist members (Artist, Associate, Student, Lifetime) to submit to Patterns in Nature. All visual media will be considered (2D, 3D, video). Artwork will be installed at our CAA @ Canal Gallery (650 E. Kendall Street) in Kendall Square.
ABOUT THE JUROR
Hadley P. Powell’s expertise spans from Old Master prints to Contemporary art. She started her career at Christie’s, New York as a specialist in the Prints & Multiples department where she researched and cataloged prints from Rembrandt to Rauschenberg. Subsequently in the Impressionist & Modern Art department, she worked on the high profile evening sales, where she advised clients buying and selling at auction and assisted in private collection management and fine art appraisals.
Hadley received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a minor in Economics from Union College. She holds a Master’s degree in Modern Art, Connoisseurship and the History of the Art Market from Christie’s Education, New York. Her prize-winning thesis studied the impact of the 1913 Armory Show on George Bellows’s Monhegan Island, Maine paintings.
She lives in Boston, Massachusetts and Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Juror’s Statement
Nature as Artistic Inspiration
For most people, their earliest artistic or creative experiences are outdoors in nature. Drawing in the sand, building with natural materials, and gathering sticks and leaves for nature collages are all ways that we learn about and begin to interact with nature and all of its beauty. As adults, those who are visually inclined, often find themselves looking at the textures of rocks and trees, the nuance of color changing in the leaves or the spectrum of colors in a sunrise or sunset. I’m also interested in the tension found in nature, the vibrant bloom of a dahlia, and equally, the beauty as it wilts and decays.
I’ve always been interested in how artists find inspiration in the natural world. By engaging with nature through their senses and emotions, artists create works that reflect their unique observations and lived experiences. For this group, I was drawn to how artists work in many different media across various styles and subjects. Each artist understands nature differently, and these unique experiences are reflected in their work.
Thank you to all of the artists who submitted their work to be juried. It was a strong and large group of artists and I wanted to ensure there was a balance between styles and subjects across media. Thank you to Erin Becker for inviting me to Jury this exhibition and to Candice Driver for facilitating and answering my many questions. Congratulations to the artists who are included, I look forward to spending time with you and learning more from you, and your work.
