Artist of the Week: PATRICIA WHITE

Dec 12, 2017

PATRICIA WHITE

What are your earliest memories of being artistic?

I started drawing as a toddler, and never stopped.

When did art become a pursuit?

In Junior High I realized it was all I wanted to do

Are you self-taught or formally educated in visual art? Starting pretty early (age 6 maybe) my parents thoughtfully sent me to Saturday classes at the Worcester Art Museum…and they signed up themselves for art appreciation classes which they enjoyed for several years!

How did you first become involved with CAA?

Someone told me about the CAA 21 years ago, when I first moved to Cambridge.

In what other ways are you involved in the local art community?

I belong to other organizations locally, including Gallery 263. And I was a RISD Trustee for 14 years, and I’m an Honorary Trustee for life! I’ve participated in Cambridge Open Studios and I’m a member of the Mosesian Center for the Arts in Watertown. A few years ago I volunteered to help the Cambridge Arts Council organize an exhibit of Cambridge artists’ work at Logan Airport.

What role do you think the artist plays in society?

Art explains, inspires, teaches, and challenges. The best example is how art and design in Apple’s products have changed the world! It’s adding art and design to STEM = STEAM! [Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics]

What medium do you currently work in and how did you choose this medium? I studied printmaking at RISD (when Michael Mazur was the instructor) and decided to get back to printmaking when I moved to Cambridge, starting with a mono-printing class at the CCAE [Cambridge Center for Adult Education]. In the last 5 years I’ve also focused on digital painting on my iPad…a different form of printmaking.

What is your creative process? Where are you finding ideas for your art these days? Everywhere! I travel often and I’m always inspired and challenged by foreign inhabitants, landscapes, homes, as well as dirt patterns, graffiti, paint splotches, old doors, etc., etc.

What is one of your artistic goals for 2018? To keep looking, pushing, and experimenting.

What’s your favorite place to see art?

Anywhere and everywhere: museums, galleries, visiting other artists’ studios, reading magazines, street art, teenagers’ clothes

What living artists are you inspired by? Helen Frankenthaler, Michael Mazer, Bunny Harvey, and various friends.

Do you own any art by other artists? Lots! I’ve bought or traded for so many pieces that I have to rotate them!

Do you have any shows coming up? A CAA group show in April, plus work in ArtLink in Indiana, and others.
