“The term ‘emerging artist‘ refers to someone who is in the early stage of his or her career, but who does not yet have an established reputation among art critics. Emerging artists help shape the dynamic and constantly changing landscape of Contemporary Art.“

Prizes Awarded at 7pm at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery. Prizes selected by artists Jenny Brown, Providence, Caleb Cole, Boston, Lavaughan Jenkins, Boston, Brittany Marcoux, Boston, and Stephanie Vovas, Los Angeles.

About Jenny Brown: Jenny Brown recieved her BFA at Bennington College and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, and was a featured artist in Uppercase Magazine’s 2013 Work/Life 3 Directory of Illustration. She lives and works in Providence, RI.”My primary mediums are drawing and collage, with a special interest in using found materials. My most recent collage work focuses on creating harmony amongst different elements of the natural world, in particular between flowers and sea creatures. All works are made from recycled, vintage, and repurposed materials.”

About Caleb Cole: Born in Indianapolis, Caleb Cole is a former altar server, scout, and 4-H Grand Champion in Gift Wrapping. His mother instilled in him a love of garage sales and thrift stores, where he developed a fascination with the junk that people leave behind. Cole is a 2015 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow, 2013 Hearst 8×10 Biennial Winner, 3-time Magenta Foundation Flash Forward Winner, 2011 St. Botolph Club Foundation Emerging Artist Award winner, 2011 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellowship Finalist, 2009 Artadia Award winner, and a 2009 Photolucida Critical Mass finalist. He exhibits regularly at a variety of national venues and has held solo shows in Boston, New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, among others. His work is in the permanent collections of Brown University Art Museum and Leslie Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art. He is represented by Gallery Kayafas, Boston.

About Lavaughan Jenkins: “…Scraping and adding, scraping and adding I continuously work and rework the surface. The figures emerge and at times spill over the edge. Allowing them to merge with or rub roughly against the world beyond the painting. This creates unrestricted forms. This is what I love about painting. The process allows me to fall in love over and over again. With each work brought from conception to completion I am compelled to experience love’s conclusion and its after effects. This part of the process is what drives my handling of the paint. As in love itself, there are instances a sensitive and delicate touch is required. Yet, also true in love, there are times when things need to become abrasive. So one must come to know when to allow what is murky, what is mysterious or difficult to discern, to be vivid in its own right.”

About Brittany Marcoux: Brittany Marcoux is a photographer and visual artist from Massachusetts. In 2016 she received her MFA in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has exhibited at the Danforth Art Museum in Framingham MA, AS220 in Providence RI, §üb∫amsøn, Aviary Gallery, and Nave Gallery in Boston MA. Marcoux is currently a teaching assistant in the Visual and Environmental Science department at Harvard University.

About Stephanie Vovas: “Based in Los Angeles. Born in Massachusetts. A.A. in photography from Maine Media Workshops. Making pictures of people is my favorite thing to do. Especially if I am drinking wine at the same time! I love to make up stories for my subjects to act out. I am obsessed and captivated by 1970’s culture.  I am most inspired by locations, of the glamourous and weird kind, hotels and homes lit with California light. My heroes are Helmut Newton, Larry Sultan, Andy Warhol, Led Zeppelin, Brigitte Bardot,  & Janis Joplin.  I am working on a book of Diora Baird, she is my modern Brigitte Bardot. I also am a Polaroid fanatic, a book is in the works on that too.”
