Why RED? For nearly 20 years, the Cambridge Art Association has hosted a fall exhibit, open to artists from the New England states, centered around a color – RED or BLUE, depending on the year. Both the success of the exhibit series, and the challenge to participating artists, lies in channeling the varied meanings of a color like RED. It is the color of action, violence, heat. It is the color of luck, happiness, and passion. RED is more than a color. Past jurors for the RED Biennial include: Joseph Ketner; Amy Sadao (Director, ICA Philadelphia); Howard Yezerski (Miller Yezerski Gallery); Carl Belz (Rose Art Museum); Jane Farver (MIT List Visual Arts Center); Nick Capasso (Fitchburg Art Museum).

About our 2018 Juror: Dan Byers is the current John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director of the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, at Harvard University.
Byers has served as senior curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston since 2015. Recent projects included the solo exhibitions of Diane Simpson and Geoffrey Farmer, as well as the group exhibitions “The Artist’s Museum” and the 2017 “Foster Prize Exhibition.”
Before his move to Boston, Byers was curator of modern and contemporary art at Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. There, he served as co-curator, with Daniel Baumann and Tina Kukielski, of the 2013 “Carnegie International,” a widely acclaimed global exhibition that staged a conversation in four parts: a major exhibition of new international art, a project on artist- and architect-designed playgrounds, the museum’s collection, and an engagement with the city of Pittsburgh. Other projects included solo exhibitions by Cathy Wilkes, Ragnar Kjartansson, and James Lee Byars, as well as the group exhibitions “Ordinary Madness” and “Reanimation: Jones, Koester, Nashashibi/Skaer.”
Juror Statement | Red is an alarm. It is a color that asks—demands—that you pay attention. We are living in a moment of high alert, and danger in this country. For me red signifies this emergency – the degradation of our democracy, of institutions, of empathy.
Many of the art works I saw while jurying this exhibition expressed anger, trauma, and a heightened sense of emotion. The heat of red burned. And yet for many, perhaps most of the works I looked at, red was a character amongst many others, or simply a sharp detail, used to articulate a complex narrative or composition. Red does that – it points things out, makes it difficult to unsee them.
The range of works I saw was astonishing, and almost whiplash inducing. The diversity of subjects, affects, subjectivities, and styles was extremely heartening. In my encounter with this difference, I was reminded of how wild, and wildly different, the human mind can be, and the nearly endless options for this difference to find highly individual expression. That range of expression, and the pleasure we experience in holding very different images or forms together in our minds and fields of vision, is the great strength of an exhibition like this one.
The best part of being a curator is playing a part in the transformative journey of an art work from the private sphere of the studio to the public space of the gallery. That transition can feel violent, vulnerable, and uncertain as the art object which had previously only conversed with its maker encounters the subjectivities and life experiences of complete strangers. What might the artworks say, or mean, to these people? And how might these strangers change the artwork? This vulnerability makes the space for minds to be changed, emotional positions shifted.
You are surrounded by red. It is asking for our attention. And perhaps in return we may be more alert to the world, and people, around us.
