A Walk’s Reward, White line woodcut

Um…drawing on the wall in my living room as a child? Undeterred, I pursued art in many forms after that; sewing, crafts, painting, drawing, ceramics and more. I was fortunate to grow up with parents who loved art.

When I needed a creative outlet as a young mother.

Self taught, with amazing help from a mentor/coach and great instructors.

The friends I have made through art ARE my community.  I am a member of several art associations and centers and love participating in exhibits and Open Studio events in this region and Southern NH.

Among the important roles–community building, enriching, beautifying, renewing, bringing up difficult subjects through creative means and staying active and vibrant members of society.

I work primarily in white line woodcut, but experiment with other forms of printing as well. Recently I have been working more with mixed media to incorporate my love of books into my pieces. I learned about white line woodcut at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2002 and never looked back. I relish playing with wood, color and shapes that this hand-printing technique allows.

Cheaper by the Dozen, Mixed media

Sounds corny, but the ideas find me for the most part.  I am often struck by a thought, phrase, or particular angle or view and want to memorize it for myself. I will make a note or take a photograph and use it as a reminder.   Some ideas simmer for years until I figure out how I’d like to present them–or frankly–get the time to focus on them.

How do you choose your subject matter? Is there a reoccuring theme that carries throughout your work? I tend to go through phases, concentrating on a broad subject and creating a number of different prints within that subject.  I’ve done more than a dozen prints of fruits and vegetables. That was fun and I learned a lot about “seeing” by all that drawing.  I explored the remarkable textile mill industry history here in New England, and the labor behind it all, for a time. And most recently I have been enamored with the majesty of trees.

POV: Pine, white line woodcut

I did a piece called “Popsicle Trees”. It remains a favorite because for first time, I realized I was free to use my own style of drawing and bring some humor into my art.

I would like to have the opportunity to create white line woodcut illustrations for books, wine labels or other projects like those.  I enjoy the challenge of this type of creativity.

It’s hard to pick just one.  Museums, art centers, student shows, galleries, art fairs….

My wonderful artistic friends and family members!

Oh yes.  My husband and I love looking at art and find it hard to resist in such a rich artistic community.

I will be participating in Newton Open Studios this April and my print group will exhibit our work at the Arnold Arboretum beginning in May.  I also have the opportunity to take part in two group shows in Peterborough NH.
