Where did you grow up? Burlington Iowa
In a few sentences, tell us about your artwork. (Ie. medium(s), a specific series, underlying themes/ interests etc.) I work with watermedia. Experimenting with different methods to obtain accidental texture appeals to me. I am attempting to capture the essence of forms from my observations, memories, and imaginings.
What inspired you to begin teaching? People who saw my art kept asking me how I obtained certain effects, so I decided to teach my techniques to others.
What is your favorite part about being an instructor in the arts? I love seeing the variety of artwork my students come up with.
What do you hope people walk away with after a class with you? The desire to keep painting.
Are there any specific stories with participants that are the most memorable? Some students told me they were stuck in a rut and uninspired about painting and my lessons rekindled their enthusiasm.
Who do you look to for inspiration or as a mentor? (Artists, administrators, public figures?) I am inspired everyday by the natural world.
Why do you think the arts are important? Art takes you out of your every day worries and stresses. It is a form of creative meditation.
Where is your favorite place to see art? Institute of Contemporary Art.
Do you own art by other artists? Yes.
