Ingrid Scheibler
What are your earliest memories of being artistic? I remember making line drawings in black and coloring them in with bright colors.
When did art become a pursuit? I began to do watercolor and ink and printmaking more as a hobby in my 20’s and 30’s and turned to painting late in 2014 more vocationally.
Are you self-taught or formally educated in visual art? Self-taught.
How did you first become involved with CAA? I applied to the 2017 Ntl. Prize Show on a call for artists
In what other ways are you involved in the local art community? Open studios annually, supporting art centers locally, attending fellow artist’s events.
What role do you think the artist plays in society? I think the artist ENLIVENS our everyday lives, whether it is by making art that causes us to FEEL something, to THINK something (conceptual, pollitical art), and/or to CHANGE ONE’S LIFE and sometimes all three. I like Louise Bourgeois’ statement, “Art is a guarantee of sanity”, which I read both autobiographically and also socially.
What medium do you currently work in and how did you choose this medium? I work in Acrylic/Mixed Media painting as well as textile-painting. I chose this medium to expand to painting on canvas from watercolor and ink and printmaking earlier in my life.
What is your creative process? Where are you finding ideas for your art these days? My creative process is very much formed by the interaction of artist and canvas, in a back and forth process involving a combination of accident, discernement and intention, and more chaotic elements. The process is generally not oriented to a specific end-point, but emerges through an openness to imaginative possibilities and challenges that emerge through the painting process itself. I am the artist, but the painting emerges out of a more supra-subjective field.I find ideas generated from my imagination, sometimes they come to me in a restful or meditative state when my mind is relaxed and open. Sometimes my subject matter comes from political or social issues that are pressing or timely, e.g. feminist issues.
How do you choose your subject matter? Is there a reoccurring theme that carries throughout your work? Sometimes my subject matter can come from political or social issues that are pressing or timely. Most often, my subject matter emerges out of the act and process of painting itself; sometimes it is generated in dialogue with another painting. Recurring themes in abstraction are bold forms and colors in virtual dialogue with each other.
In your opinion, what’s your best/favorite piece you’ve made? One is a piece called Mamouna, 2017.
What is one of your artistic goals for 2018? To continue to develop my series of textile-paintings and apply to juried shows with excellent jurors; ideally to get a gallery to showcase my work.
What’s your favorite place to see art? Outdoor venues like sculpture gardens or parks, where the art surprises you and you can interact more with it.
What living artists are you inspired by? Charlene von Heyl, Yayoi Kusama, Laura Owens, Thomas Nozkowski, Anne Truitt.
Do you own any art by other artists? Yes.
Do you have any shows coming up? I’m in the current National Prize Show at CAA 2018 and have applied to several juried shows but have not heard yet.
