JUROR STATEMENT

“…When a poem is kind of first born, in my head, I can kind of see its colors and flavors a little bit. So I might not have words or phrases, but I know the tonology… the aura of what I want to encapsulate…”

-Amanda Gorman, 2024

Aura is self-defined and felt in both body and mind. One definition is medical: a sensation experienced before a migraine or an epilepsy episode. Another describes an emanation surrounding the body of a living creature. Aura is also a distinct energy, atmosphere, and feeling. An aura is a vibe. During much of my academic training as an art historian and career as a curator, I have not often thought explicitly about an artwork’s vibes. It has been a privilege to reflect on the aura of these works and exhibition as a whole, by a wonderful group of artists near and far. All my thanks to Candice Driver, Erin Becker, and the Cambridge Art Association for facilitating this thoughtful open call.

Artists in this exhibition delve into auras of the sensorial, natural world, acts of care, folklore, and mythology through a range of media. Intimacy with materials threads several works together. Some share a deep interest in self-definition, exploring portraiture through figuration and abstraction. Each work emulates energies of ritual, placemaking, and belonging, an always and particularly poignant convocation in our current climate, where the rights of many are not guaranteed and are increasingly at risk in the United States and around the globe. To ruminate on aura is to radically center care in the body, mind, and spirit.

My biggest gratitude to all the artists who submitted work. Your generosity of time and labor is deeply appreciated.
