When was this piece created? August 2021
What is the story behind this piece? Created for my Solo Art show VALOREM: Mental Health from the feminine perspective: The piece explores how we view a woman’s body. With simple silhouettes, I exaggerate the breasts and posteriors of dancing female figures. Their heads are disconnected from their form and are meant to make the viewer have to choose to focus on the bodies or their heads, but never both together.
What inspired this piece? I’ve always loved figure drawing, and through my love of animation and comics, I always think about exaggeration in a body’s movement.
Is there an outside element that influenced this piece (i.e. another artist, nature, a novel, a theory, etc)? Around the time I created this piece, I had discovered the fabric/fashion brand Marimekko. Their bold use of pattern inspired me to use Silk Screen to create this piece.
Is this part of a series; if so what is the series? This piece was created for my Solo Art Show VALOREM. It was my last design I created before the show started.
Explain/Tell us anything else you would like us to know about this specific work. Dancing Women is a silk screen hand made print. The prints made are part of a limited edition.
What is one of your artistic goals? One of my artistic goals is to explore mental health and the internal or external factors that impact a person. Through showing my own feelings and experiences, I hope to relate to others and validate their invisible struggles.
