November 7, 2023 – January 3, 2024
Presented at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery & CAA @ University Place
Opening Reception & Awards Presentation | November 9, 6-8pm
Abigail Ogilvy, Owner, Abigail Ogilvy Gallery (Boston + Los Angeles)
WHY BLUE? For 25 years, the Cambridge Art Association has hosted a fall exhibit, open to artists from the New England states, centered around a color – RED or BLUE, depending on the year. Both the success of the exhibit series, and the challenge to participating artists, lies in channeling the varied meanings of a color like BLUE. With both positive (a blue bird sky) and negative (feeling blue), it is a color that evokes a range of emotions. BLUE is more than a color.
Past jurors for the RED & BLUE Biennials include: Joseph Ketner; Amy Sadao (Director, ICA Philadelphia); Howard Yezerski (Miller Yezerski Gallery); Carl Belz (Rose Art Museum); Jane Farver (MIT List Visual Arts Center); Vera Ingrid Grant (The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African & African-American Art); Nick Capasso (Fitchburg Art Museum); Sarah Montross (deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum); Dan Byers (Carpenter Center for Visual Arts); Layla Bermeo (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston); and Dina Deitsch (Tufts University Art Galleries).
Please note: that BLUE 2023 will be presented at two galleries Kathryn Schultz Gallery and CAA @ University Place. Artists cannot choose which location their piece will be exhibited. The entirety of the exhibit will be featured online for the duration of the exhibition timeline.
ABOUT THE JUROR
Abigail Ogilvy is a curator and gallerist who owns Abigail Ogilvy Gallery in Boston, MA. Since opening the gallery in 2015, she has been dedicated to her mission ofpresenting thought-provoking, engaging exhibitions that present ideas or topics that are not well-represented and encourage dialogue and engagement. Typical gallery programming has varied from emerging to established, while Ogilvy also collaborates with nonprofits and educational organizations on auctions, events, and exhibitions that aim to give back to the community. In 2019, the gallery introduced the Fresh Faces exhibition to its programming, a now annual show featuring New England-based student artists with the goal of garnering exposure for young artists. In 2023, the gallery program expanded to Los Angeles, CA where the program will provide a platform for new perspectives and education through independent curation and artist partnerships. The collaborative approach upends the traditional gallery model and aims to enhance the careers of artists, curators, collectors, and other art world professionals, both emerging and established. The gallery program primarily features guest curators in order to share diverse perspectives and voices with the Los Angeles area and the greater art market. A large part of Ogilvy’s mission is to build a more equitable world by creating unseen possibilities and making new connections for our artists. She is passionate about fostering positive gallery relationships and experiences for artists, collectors, and visitors. Abigail Ogilvy is the Global Chapter Chair of the Association of Women Art Dealers, a member of the Boston Art Dealers Association, and a member of ArtTable.
JUROR’S STATEMENT
It was such a joy and honor to jury the BLUE exhibition for Cambridge Art this year. I was profoundly moved by both the artworks submitted and the accompanying words that shared stories of personal discovery, growth, loss, and the journeys of each artist at the many different stages of one’s career.
In Boston, blue is such an important color being close to the water. I am an avid runner, so I have spent many crisp, early mornings running through the city. The bright blue sky over Boston’s many universities, institutions, hospitals, start-ups, and so on, always makes me feel rejuvenated and ready to start the day fresh with ideas. In a city that supports innovation, it came as no surprise that the artworks included in this show embrace forward movement. Blue in this exhibition has a spirit of strength and resilience – an abstract painting that represents much more than meets the eye, a figurative artwork that shows a quiet steadiness, flowers or sea reminding us to care for the things that surround us.
The artists on view express their visual language in a range of media, all coming together to form a show that allows the viewer to take in many new perspectives.
