Chloe Luisa Piñero‘s Lights is currently on view in Vernacular Glamour.

Vernacular Glamour brings together a cross-section of contemporary Latinx artists working with the visual vocabularies of camp, popular culture, high fashion, and baroque painting and architecture through vernacular idioms. Engaging the materials and forms of ball culture, advertising media, spiritual practices, and street art, the eight artists in Vernacular Glamour mobilize the artifice and exuberance of glamour to address the complexities of everyday life.

Chloe Luisa Piñero makes work that spans painting, mixed media assemblage, digital collage, and sculpture. Pulling imagery and objects from her physical and digital environments, Piñero references her personal histories, while posing larger questions about personal and collective identity around image, objects, and material.

For Piñero, college and assemblage are processes that explore and reflect the nuances of mixed identity and the multiplicity of experience. Chloe combines traditions of figurative painting with unconventional materials and objects sourced from thrift, hardware, dollar, and discount beauty stores. Found objects are woven into compositions built from cut outs of vintage adult magazines and travel advertisements, along with present day imagery sourced from Google and Instagram explore-pages.

Gathering materials and revisiting places from the past becomes its own practice of self reflection for Chloe. This process of collecting nostalgic objects and imagery is driven by her interest in how we construct identity in response to visual influences from our environment. And specifically, how cultural norms around gender, sexuality, and desire inform our reactions and the meaning we attach to objects, images and material.

Chloe Luisa Piñero’s Lights can be viewed in Vernacular Glamour at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery until February 19, 2022. For more information, click here.
