Why RED? For over 20 years, the Cambridge Art Association has hosted a fall exhibit, open to artists from the New England states, centered around a color – RED or BLUE, depending on the year. Both the success of the exhibit series, and the challenge to participating artists, lies in channeling the varied meanings of a color like RED. It is the color of action, violence, heat. It is the color of luck, happiness, and passion. Increasingly, it has come to represent the socio-policitical divide in the United States. RED is more than a color.

Past jurors for the RED & BLUE Biennials include: the late Joseph Ketner; Amy Sadao (Director, ICA Philadelphia); Howard Yezerski (Miller Yezerski Gallery); the late Carl Belz (Rose Art Museum); the late Jane Farver (MIT List Visual Arts Center); Vera Ingrid Grant (The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African & African-American Art); Nick Capasso (Fitchburg Art Museum); Sarah Montross (deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum); Dan Byers (Carpenter Center for Visual Arts); Layla Bermeo (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston); and Jessica May (The Trustees/deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum).

Juror: Dina Deitsch (she/her/hers)

As Director and Chief Curator of the Tufts University Art Galleries, Dina oversees the temporary exhibitions and public programs at the Aidekman Arts Center on the Medford campus and at the SMFA at Tufts Boston campus in addition to the university’s Permanent Art Collection. She also organizes contemporary art exhibitions and chairs the university’s Gifts of Art and Public Art Committees.

Dina Deitsch’s Juror’s Statement: The CAA’s annual fall exhibition is a rite of passage – welcoming in artists from across the area into one of the region’s oldest artist associations.

I am honored to juror this year’s RED show. Perhaps one of the more symbolic colors out of the crayon box, red in Cambridge reads to me as fall – with the trees in full glory and this city showing off its smartest time of year. By December, red shows up in early sunsets and the twinkling of holiday lights.

The 60 artworks selected over the two exhibitions address all the grand associations of the color—from lust to glory to the spiritual—but at the same time they bring us back to the quiet, everyday moments—the minutia of our lived lives that we’ve learned we can no longer take for granted. A patch of carpet, snapshots of strangers, a bright abstract mark against a sea of beige, a pile of buttons and, of course, flowers and mouths, displaying nature in all its garish beauty and gore. This capacity to toggle between outsized metaphors and small, overlooked moments in a single work, a single image, is a great reminder of what art can do unlike anything else. It allows us to connect the broad themes of humanity—life, death, suffering, joy—with the simple, everyday moments.

Seeing this magic trick through the eyes of 60 artists—each displaying a different vision, techniques, understanding of material and perspective—will, I hope, offer just a fraction of what can be possible.
